She is the sister of Kurt Cobain, who was the lead singer and guitarist of the rock band Nirvana. Kim is also a descendant of the Irish author James Joyce.

Kim Cobain grew up in Aberdeen, Washington along with her brother Kurt. She attended Aberdeen High School where she was a cheerleader, and later went to Evergreen State College in Olympia, where she studied art and music.

Kim started her career as a musician, playing bass guitar for the punk rock band Pagan Babies. She also played guitar and sang backing vocals for the all-female punk rock band Frightwig. In the 1990s, she worked as a DJ and music curator and also wrote about music for various publications.

Along with her career in music, Kim also pursued her passion for visual arts. She works in various mediums such as painting, sculpture, and photography. Her art has been exhibited in galleries in the United States and Europe.

In 1992, she married musician Jack Irons and they have a daughter named Scarlett. The couple divorced in 2004. Currently, Kim lives in Los Angeles and continues to work as a visual artist and musician.
